How to study the N5 kanji

Take one chapter at a time. Ten kanji is enough for a focused session, and Kanji Bento’s daily goal of 5, 10 or 20 reviews keeps the pace steady.

Learn each reading through a word. A reading on its own is hard to remember; a word like 大学 (だいがく, university) gives it a sound, a meaning and a place to live.

Come back when the reviews are due. Rating a card Not yet, Got it or Easy schedules its next review, so the words you find hard return sooner.

Questions

How many kanji are in JLPT N5?

There’s no official list, so the number depends on the course. Kanji Bento’s N5 deck has 80 kanji, grouped into 8 chapters of up to ten.

Can I study these N5 kanji for free?

This list is free to use. N5 Chapter 1, with 10 kanji and their words, is included in the app. Kanji Bento Plus unlocks the remaining N5 chapters and all N4–N1 chapters with a one-time purchase.

What do On and Kun mean on this list?

On (音読み) are readings that came from Chinese, shown in katakana. Kun (訓読み) are native Japanese readings, shown in hiragana. Which one a word uses depends on the word, so Kanji Bento teaches each reading through real vocabulary.
